Hosting vs Domain Name – What’s the Difference? (Sri Lanka Edition) #
Clear definition #
A domain name is your website address (for example, yourbusiness.lk). Web hosting is the service that stores your website and delivers it to visitors. You need both to publish a website that people can access reliably.
Why Sri Lankan users commonly get this wrong #
Because .lk registrations can involve approval steps and paperwork, many people assume the domain registration process includes “setting up the website.” In reality, domain registration only gives you the name. Hosting is still required, and DNS must connect the domain to the hosting server.
What a domain name actually does #
A domain is a human-friendly label that points to technical records in DNS. DNS records (A/AAAA/CNAME/MX/TXT) tell the internet where to find your website and where to deliver your email. A domain does not store your website files.

What hosting actually does #
Hosting provides server resources: disk space, CPU/RAM, databases, and often email mailboxes. When someone visits your domain, the hosting server responds with your website pages.
How domain + hosting work together #
- You register a domain.
- You purchase hosting (shared/VPS/cloud).
- You connect the domain to hosting via DNS (nameservers or A record).
- Visitors can load your website and your email can receive messages (if MX records are set correctly).
Nameservers vs A record (which one should you use?) #
Nameservers delegate DNS management to a DNS provider (often your hosting provider). This is simplest for beginners. An A record points your domain to a specific IP address while keeping DNS management where it is.
What happens when one expires #
- If the domain expires: your website and email usually stop working because DNS no longer resolves correctly.
- If hosting expires: the domain can still be owned by you, but the website/email service stops because the server is unavailable.
Practical Sri Lanka example #
You register abc.lk and buy hosting elsewhere. To make the website live, you must update DNS:
- Either set nameservers to the hosting provider’s nameservers, or
- Set an A record pointing to the hosting server IP.
After changing DNS, wait for propagation and test from multiple networks (mobile data vs Wi‑Fi) to avoid cached results.
Quick comparison table #
| Feature | Domain | Hosting |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Address (name) | Server service |
| Stores website files | No | Yes |
| Controls DNS records | Yes (via DNS) | Sometimes (if using provider nameservers) |
| Needs renewal | Yes | Yes |
| Can work alone | No practical website | No friendly address |
